Gather at the Bangkok Discova Day Tour Shop

Meet at the Bangkok Discova Day Tour Shop near MRT Sam Yot Station at 8:30 am. After a quick bike fitting and briefing, we head out. Cycling through the heart of the backpacker area, Khaosan Road, you will soon be biking off the roads this bike tour winds through small laneways, past ancient temples and canals to see the heart and soul of Bangkok.

Get out and cycle

There are no particularly famous sights that you will see on this bike tour. It is all about exploring the city by bike away from the tourists and big roads, to see the real Bangkok where people live, work and play. We cycle along the Chao Phraya River and then pedal cross the river on the Rama 8 Bridge. From here we visit ancient temples and urban street life.

Bangkok Noi

Bangkok Noi is the name given to a large canal of the Chao Phraya River. Bike along the canal through tiny alleyways home to a Muslim community. After cycling over a bridge you bike the canal back the other way, this time passing Buddhist temples and one of Bangkok’s first train depots. If open you are in luck to visit a bronze bowl foundry and the old steam engines at the Thonburi train depot - such is the diversity of the city when you get in close.

Ferry back over the Chao Phraya

After a local ferry to cross back over the river, our bike tour passes the Grand Palace where we take a walk through a public park that was once exclusively used by the royal family. After cycling more twisting alleyways, pedaling through a food market, you bike past rows of Buddhas and other sacred images. The area around the Giant Swing isis where Buddha images are made and sold.  The Giant Swing is one of the landmarks of the city and was once used for an important Hindu ceremony. From the Swing it is only a short bike ride back to the Grasshopper Shop. The bike tour finishes around 1 pm.

Note: Street numbers are not overly useful in Thailand as people work more off landmarks and intersections. The best landmark close to us is Sam Yod MRT station.

MRT

The shop is just a 4-minute walk from the new MRT station Sam Yod and just one block away from Miramar hotel. We are at the last building on the same block with KC Music Center.

Taxi

It is worth printing the map on this page to show a taxi driver if you choose to come to the Grasshopper Shop by taxi. Bear in mind that you will be traveling during peak hour so if travelling from the downtown area you should allow at least one hour to get here.

River Boat

It is possible to get reasonably close to us on the Chao Phraya Express Boat getting off at Pier Memorial Bridge which is a 15-minute walk or short tuk-tuk ride from Phra Athit Pier. The ferry takes about 1 hour from Central Pier at Sapan Taksin. The boat service closes at 7pm so it cannot be used to get back to your hotel after the tour.
